Bill 105, Waste Reporting Act 2008

On October 16, 2008, Charles debated his first private member’s bill at Queen’s Park.

Bill 105: The Waste Reporting Act calls for the monitoring and reporting of Industrial, Commercial & Institutional (IC&I) waste in Ontario.

The IC&I sector generates an estimated 60% of Ontario’s waste, yet only about 12% is recycled. Many local businesses contract recycling removal, however those recyclables are often being diverted straight into landfill.

Bill 105, if passed, would require waste carriers and waste disposal facilities to keep accurate records of the amounts of recyclable and non-recyclable IC&I waste they process.

This data would then be submitted to the Minister of the Environment.

More importantly, this information will facilitate the creation of appropriate targets to improve IC&I waste diversion and allow progress to be monitored.

The bill passed second reading with all party support. To read the bill, please click here.

Financial Literacy

On October 8th 2009, Charles debated his private member’s resolution calling on the Ministry of Education to include financial literacy education in Ontario’s elementary and secondary school curricula. More information is available here.

Citing a need to better prepare students to make financial decisions, the resolution passed unanimously.

Then on November 2nd, the Ministry of Education announced that, starting in September of 2011, financial literacy education will be taught to students in grades 4 to 12. Learn more about the initiative here.
